According to choreographer Agnes de Mille, she played a large part in putting a primary focus on female sexual desire in the play as the plot developed. Please address one or more of the following points in your discussion of sex and romance in Oklahoma! Its obvious from the first notes of Surrey with the Fringe on Top that Laurey Williams and Curly McLain are sweet on each other and destined to marry (since engagement and/or marriage were the conventional endings to musicals of the period).o Why does Laurey ask Judd Frye to take her to the box social, given that she tells Aunt Eller that she is afraid of him? ? Is it fair of Laurey to ask Jud to be her escort? Does fairness even matter in this situation? Why? ? What does the dream ballet tell us about Laureys feelings about Jud and Curley? ? If you were playing Laurey, is fear the only emotion you would show toward Jud? ? Why does Laurey ultimately choose Curly over Jud? Ado Annie is a definite challenge to the good girl and bad girl stereotypes common to musical theatre of the time. o Is Ado Annie a proto-feminist icon who chooses when and how she takes her pleasure? How much responsibility does Annie take for her actions? How aware is she of potential consequences? (For example, is she fully aware of Ali Hakims intentions toward her?) o Is Annie a potential/actual slut whose desires have to be policed (shotgun marriage to man of her fathers choice) because of the threat she poses to herself, her family, and the larger community? o Both Ado Annies father (Andrew Carnes) and her fianc (Will Parker) object to Annies behavior with other men. Are both mens judgement and concerns about and for Annie presented as equally valid? What about their proposed solutions to Annies wayward ways? Where does Aunt Eller fit in the continuum of female sexuality? Sex and sexuality (of course) are of interest to the men as well as the women. How would you characterize the male attitudes toward their own need/right to pursue sexual activity (anything from holding hands to intercourse)? And their attitudes toward womens ability to do the same? o Andrew Carnes o Curly McLain o Will Parker and the men who sing and dance Kansas City with him o Ali Hakim and the men who sing and dance Its a Scandal! Its an Outrage! o Jud Frye Please watch Oklahoma Musical by Oscar Hammerstein II and Richard Rodgers.
