Slavery ended at different times all over the New World, and each region arrived at this stage from different pressures and circumstances, a feat that was often based on many steps. The process in which slavery was officially banned in each region was based in part on the social and/or political developments distinctive to each area of the diaspora. For example, sometimes enlistment in the military would bring merely the promise of freedom to African slaves, while a set of laws forbidding the practice altogether could have been required for comprehensive freedom. Learning about these commonalities and differences from place to place help us to understand the characteristics many regions shared while their governments were dealing with the dilemmas of slave holding. These various histories also point to a variety of paths and policies that governments and leaders had to devise and work through. Your task over the next few weeks is to write a thoughtful but concise compare and contrast paper on slaverys end (4-5 pages) comparing all the processes that led up to the end of slavery in two different regions. For this assignment you will undergo 3 major steps where 1) you will write an honest and extensive 1st draft, 2) you will be paired with a classmate and experience a peer review process, and 3) you will revise and submit your final version online through a link: SafeAssign You can begin at any point to start working on a draft (your first version) of your compare and contrast paper. To help you stay on track you will receive notification of incremental tasks within each module folder until the final paper is due. The two world regions you write about will be your choice as long as they were part of the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade era. I recommend choosing two from the following list: Brazil, Cuba, Dominican Republic [formerly called: Santo Domingo], Haiti [first called Saint Dominique], Jamaica, Mexico, Peru, or the United States of America. In the following weeks you will be presented with specific assignment documents that explain a set of tasks leading up to the completion of your final research paper. (Refer to the weekly assignments folder in this and subsequent modules for your supporting assignments)
