Purposes for This Assignment To practice using rhetorical concepts as an analytical tool for understanding a texts credibility and persuasive strategies To acquaint yourself with genre conventions of a thesis-driven essay in and across disciplines. To begin to deepen understanding of critical issues pertaining to self in relation to the course theme. To use library databases and resources for research purposes. Requirements & Options Double-spaced, 12 pt. serif-font (e.g., Times New Roman) Cover letter: Professional memo to readers, include date and salutations Essay Heading: Descriptive title, Name, & Date Use appropriate style (MLA or APA) for in-text citations and references at the end of your essay and include page numbers Bring a hard copy for workshop AND upload digital version as Word doc on Canvas for full credit Length: 4-5 pages (1300-1600 words) Option #2 Compare the argument strategies between two of the shared readings on social media. Write an academic essay that makes an argument about the strengths and/or weaknesses of each texts persuasive strategies. Option #3 Compare the argument strategies between a shared reading and a secondary text of your choice that deals with a similar topic or theme. The secondary text can be written, spoken, or video and does not need to be scholarly/academic. Process Tips Do research on the author(s) you are writing about to evaluate the authors ethos as it shows up in the text(s). For option #1, use analysis to analyze as many persuasive strategies as you can identify. For option #2, analyze interesting differences and/or similarities between the two writers in their discussions the given topics AND in their uses of rhetorical strategies, i.e. things you find intriguing. For option #3, analyze claims and evidence in both essays you examine AND in their uses of rhetorical strategies.
