In his 1776 essay Common Sense Thomas Paine argued that “the cause of America is in great measure the cause of all mankind” (Voices, 98).

Prompt: In his 1776 essay Common Sense Thomas Paine argued that “the cause of America is in great measure the cause of all mankind” (Voices, 98). He even argued that the new nation would become “an asylum for mankind” (Voices, 102). In your essay, explain why Paine makes this case. Based on your reading of colonial society from your Foner textbook, do you agree with Paine’s assertions? What aspects of the colonial cause do you think would support Paine’s claim? What aspects would not? Your responses should be approximately 500 words. Strive to make a clear and decisive argument in each essay by dividing it into three parts: 1. Exposition: Your first paragraph should describe the reading, and briefly explain what you have decided about the questions posed. 2. Development: The middle of your essay should explain your answer. It should offer details about the main arguments and content of the reading to support your claims. It should also offer background from Give Me Liberty! 3. Conclusion: Your last paragraph should recapitulate your argument, and add some final point that you think bolsters your perspective. You can use phases like “in this essay I argue . . . ” or “I think that . . . ” or “in conclusion, I believe that . . . ” Quote a little from the readings when you find some passage that illustrates your points. Use your Give Me Liberty! textbook to provide background, or to add additional quotes. When you quote, reference your quote at the end of the sentence like this: (Give Me Liberty!, 375) or (Voices, 96).

Describe also how the three friends defend the principle (but also how they hedge their certainty by providing alternative explanations for Jobs situation that do not depend on the principle).

1. In an essay approximately 1 page in length, describe the overall structure of the Book of Job, highlighting basic content and form as well as how each successive main section is related to, builds upon, or problematizes what has come before it. 2. In an essay approximately half-page in length, discuss how the Prologue establishes the validity or non-validity of the principle of retribution as one of the main themes of the book. Describe how the author undermines this principle already in the Prologue and further undermines it in Jobs speeches (especially his third and fourth speeches). Describe also how the three friends defend the principle (but also how they hedge their certainty by providing alternative explanations for Jobs situation that do not depend on the principle). 3. In an essay approximately half-page in length, discuss (via comparison, contrast, and development of meaning) the term fear and its many synonyms in the Book of Job, starting with its ambiguity in the Prologue and moving through each of the speeches (not every use of the term needs to be addressed, but there should be at least two examples of how the friends are using the term and at least four examples from Jobs speeches, with at least one example from three different speeches). 4. Each of the speakers has used illustrations or metaphors involving plants and/or animals to make their points. In an essay approximately half-page in length, describe how each has utilized these illustrations/metaphors. Do this for Job last (or in alternation with examples from the friends), and when discussing Jobs use of the metaphors, explain how it contrasts with and undermines the arguments of the other friends. 5. All four of the speakers have used the term hope. In an essay approximately half-page pages in length, briefly discuss what the three friends have meant by the term, and then in more detail, how Job repeatedly utilizes the term differently than they (again, not every instance of the word needs to be analyzed, but several examples from the friends speeches and several examples from at least two of Jobs speeches are required). NB please be specific and must put paragraph number, line number, and page number! NB, it should be marked with numbers of the questions above! NB please use a simple English

Comparing Religious Traditions

For the first paper, each student will compare a feature common to two or more religious traditions encountered through our course. Note that you may choose to investigate a tradition we have not studied yet for the first paper, such as Islam, but it must be one covered in this course. Examples of features you might compare include rituals (weddings, funerals, births, holidays, etc.), community leaders (priests and rabbis), important shared figures (Abraham, Jesus), a concept (covenant, sin, etc.), creation stories, supernatural beings (angels), or notions about heaven and hell. You will (a) identify and define the common feature in question (b) compare similarities and differences among the form that appears in each tradition and (c) the significance and consequences of those differences. For example, what do the different ways that Jews and Muslims view Abraham tell us about broader differences between these traditions. Judaism, Christianity, and Medieval Catholicism

Entertainment Media Pitch

A “pitch” is simply a letter to a producer that attempts to sell a concept for a TV show or a movie. It provides a synopsis (or treatment, as it is called in the trade) of what the show or movie will be like–a “word picture” description of the setting, characters, plot, etc. It is your opportunity to be creative, and to “flesh out” an idea that you may have had for a new TV show or movie. Imagine you have the opportunity to pitch an idea for a new TV program or movie that is based on current market trends. You will need to research what the popular genres are in either movies or television and write your pitch with the intention of selling a story that falls in line with what is currently profitable. Write a 350- to 700-word pitch to either a movie or television producer. Include an analysis discussing how current popular entertainment trends do or do not reflect American cultural values and their influence on social behavior as well. Submit your assignment. Refer to the following required learning activities Introduction to Mass Communication, Ch. 7 Introduction to Mass Communication, Ch. 6 Introduction to Mass Communication, Ch. 8 Introduction to Mass Communication, Ch. 9 Week 3 Electronic Reserve Readings Week 3 Electronic Reserve Readings Videos TEDTalks: Mark Ronson TEDTalks: The World’s Most Boring Television The assignment also calls for you to include an analysis of current entertainment trends that support the need (and potential success) for the TV or movie concept you are proposing. That is why Student Materials are included in the assignment instructions. Remember, when you use those materials, you must include a reference page, as well as in-text citations.
