Letters to Employees

Scenerio:
You are a supervisor, and your team is made up of strong employees and employees who are not meeting expectations. You have an opening for a senior level position and look to promote from within your team. Two individuals (you make up the individuals names) on your team have applied for the position. One employee has worked for you for three years. This employee excels on every project, asks thoughtful questions, has a positive attitude, and is willing to help any member of the team. The second candidate has worked for you for over five years, however, has a track record that is not stellar. The employee has a difficult time responding to their clients promptly, and when they do respond, it is not always professional. This team member is quick to add new projects to their plate, but the follow-through is not consistent, nor the quality of their work. You have addressed these issues over the years, but when you see improvement, it does not last long. Who do you promote?

Assignment:
Draft a letter to each employee where you communicate The Good and The Bad news to the employees. For the person receiving the promotion, be detailed on why the person is moving into the senior level position and provide the responsibilities in their new role (create relevant responsibilities). In this letter, you will demonstrate how to give positive written feedback to an employee.

In the second letter, you will inform the other employee they did not get the position and the reasons why they were not selected. Your writing must remain positive in tone and provide suggestions on how to improve in their current position (create viable improvements).

Use outside research to help guide your letters, but do not copy online sources.

Grading and Rubric:
– must use “Professional Letter Template”
– for both employees: provide details on why you did or did not select the employee for the position
– for the employee who got the position: describe responsibilities of new position
– for the employee who did NOT get the position: describe areas where they could improve.
– do NOT use a passive voice throughout each letter
– must be free of grammatical errors and unnecessary words

Analyze each essay according to methods taken from Chapter 2 in FIAW

The process of initiating a research project and building new knowledge requires us, first, to recognize different perspectives, and second, to offer something new to our audience based on our own research, analysis, experience, and insights. This essay asks you to apply the strategies of analysis toward two essays related to your topic. You will read, analyze, and construct an argument that develops a rhetorical stance in relation to the essays you have chosen.

Keep these things in mind as you develop your essay:
Read and annotate two essays (if you do not yet have two relevant essays from your own research, get in touch with me and I will assign you two);
Analyze each essay according to methods taken from Chapter 2 in FIAW;
Identify each authors central claim and how he or she supports it (e.g., by citing other authors, by narrating experience, by including evidence he or she gathered through research);
Draft a thesis statement that takes a stance in relation to the arguments you have analyzed.

The Composing Process
Academic research writing takes many forms. For this assignment, however, you will adopt a common organizational structure. Specifically, you should introduce your subject and state your thesis, offer some context for your analysis, present your analysis, come to a general resolution that balances the perspectives you have analyzed and reinforces your thesis, and conclude the paper by pointing toward additional research that should or needs to be undertaken. Consider the following as you structure and draft your paper:
Introduction (frame your topic)
Thematic Context (build on Essay I why is this topic relevant, urgent, etc.)
Rhetorical Analysis (focus on 2 comparable sources)
Resolution of Perspectives (reinforce your thesis)
Conclusion & Directions (gesture toward future action)
