Classical Mythology

Topic: Compose an aetiological (a.k.a. etiological) myth. No outside research is required. This creative effort should
be based on your knowledge of gods and myths from our readings and class discussions. Use gods and goddesses
appropriate to the creation of whatever object, institution, or phenomenon you choose to write about.
What is an aetiological myth? Such myths often serve an explanatory purpose by illustrating the origins of some
aspect of the natural or social environment. For example, the myth of Pandora explains the origin of women, or the
myth of Lycaon explains the origin of werewolves. You can choose to explain the origin of some natural feature or
phenomenon, political institution or social custom, or person or divinity. You should include known mythological
figures as appropriate, (e.g. if someone falls in love in your myth you should include Aphrodite or Eros, or if you
explain the origins of a sport you should include a god such as Apollo or Hermes or Ares). For a more detailed
definition of aetiology, see Morford, Lenardon, and Shams Classical Mythology, 11th ed., 2019, pages 6-7.
Format: Your paper should integrate the existing Greek gods/goddesses in a coherent and effective manner. It
should include a well-organized plot line, well-developed characterization, and well-established setting. Your aetion
should be clear to your reader by the end of your paper. You can set your story in any time or place, but make sure
the relevance of your choices is made clear in your narrative. Your paper should be well-written using proper
grammar, syntax, and spelling. You may wish to consider adding an original character or incorporating ancient
Greek narrative techniques as we have seen them in primary sources.
Your final product should be typed and double-spaced, using a reasonable font (e.g. Times Roman) in 12
point size. Include your name and a title at the top of the first page. Your paper should be at least 5 full pages in
length, (this is approximately 1250 words).

What is the story of the ring of Gyges supposed to show about most peoples attitude towards morality? Is this claim correct? Explain why or why not.

The Republic, Plato
Your paper should be about three pages long. This is only a guideline intended to indicate how long I imagine a good answer would have to be. I will not penalize you for going over or under this length. However if you are under this length I suggest carefully considering what more may need to be said.
Clearly list which question you are answering.

Please provide page references when appropriate. I.e. when mentioning a specific idea. Keep quotes to a minimum. In a paper this short you should use your own words.

1) Judging from Absalom, Absalom! (and anything else you have read by Faulkner), what is the relationship of the Modernist landscape of Yoknapatawpha County to the transcendent value systems of the past? (How, for example, do the multiple narrators of the Sutpen story relate to that system?)

2) In another Faulkner work, Requiem for a Nun, Gavin Stevens says, The past is never dead. Its not even past. Discuss the importance of the past and how it impinges upon the present/future in Absalom, Absalom! How is the relationship to the past (especially in the South) part of a shared memory? How does Absalom, Absalom! contemplate how that memory is shaped and shared?

3) Discuss the presentation of women in Tender Is the Night. How does this presentation reinforce certain ideas of Dicks decline?

4) One of the major differences between Romanticism and Modernism is the relationship of the past and present (and, hence, future). Would you consider Tender Is the Night to be a novel that addresses this issue? Discuss.

Business ethics and Sustainability

Part 2 (Essays 3-4) taken from lectures 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 Length: 2 short essays. Each essay is 500 words max (excluding references) Point of View Journal Why? Forming judgements and making informed ethical business decisions is increasingly significant as the business environment is global, dynamic, complex and uncertain. This is especially relevant in addressing ethical issues and opportunities associated with sustainability, such as climate change, materials scarcity, population growth, rising consumerism and enabling equitable human development. Should organisations, their managers and leaders be responsible for proactive approaches to address sustainability issues? Should they be responsible and accountable for ensuring their own practices are ethical, just, sustainable and inclusive without producing negative externalities? Perhaps a focus on efficient and effective management of their own operations to enhance the economy and their own profitability is sufficient? How do managers form decisions that account for diverse and often conflicting stakeholder demands? What? Developing a Point of View (PoV) to answer such multidimensional and complex questions requires critical engagement with the topic. Analysing the implicit assumptions, differing perspectives and considering alternative PoV supports the development of critical reflexive practice. Avoiding this, by jumping to quick conclusions, may expose decision makers to risks and missed opportunities. Through completing the ongoing PoV journal you will practice a technique and develop an ability to achieve an informed point of view regarding business responses to ethical dilemmas and sustainability issues. On an individual level, this assessment develops skills and attributes that enable analysis of business decisions in terms of ethical practice and social responsibility (PLO 4.1) and to analyse sustainability principles for various stakeholders in relation to business contexts (PLO 4.2). How? Through the Point-Counter-Point technique you develop a narrative that consider alternate perspectives on a topic to obtain an informed PoV. Rather than jumping to an immediate conclusion, be informed about the topic, search for and evaluate differing PoV, and then synthesise these into your unique PoV. You are not looking for an answer, but an informed way to frame analysis of a business context or decision. Conduct your own thought experiment, discover other points of view and reframe how you perceive and understand an ethical and/or sustainable problem/issue/context. Its about opening yourself to different ways of seeing, thinking and doing. Being more conscious of implicit assumptions. Knowing and articulating how and why you arrived at your PoV. A prelude to forming a judgement and making an informed decision. PoV Technique Each lecture topic is designed around a key topic related to Ethics and Sustainability. Part 2 (essays 3-4) choose a topic from lectures 7-11. For the final submission of PoV assessment task: Write it up. Select two lecture topics from lectures 6-11. You are required to write 2 short essays for each selected topic. The following is provided as a suggested format to guide your PoV short essay: Introduction Outline one PoV in relation to the topic Outline at least one alternate PoV Conclusion: on balance between the POVs create or reinstate your own PoV and justify your perspective You should incorporate and reference academic and other information sources appropriately to validate and support your argument. Please use the Harvard reference style. Assessment Task Requirements 1. Complete the POVs short essays by following the recommended technique (outlined above). Each PoV should be 500 words (excluding references). The source is from lecture 7-11, I will upload the file I had ordered the same assignment like this before, the difference only it was based on lecture 1-6 but now it is lecture 7-11. I only got 16 out of 25 and I got the feedback and I will upload the feeback by pdf.

Overall, the challenge here is to isolate a theme in Sappho or Sophocles that moves youand then build an argument about how this theme gets developed, explored, or deployed by the author/translator

This 1000 word (4 page) essay should use strong thesis and direct references to the chosen text to produce a thoughtful consideration of an issue, question, problem, or image central to the work being analyzedeither Carsons translation of Sapphos poetry or Heaneys version of Sophocles Philoctetes. No outside research should be used, though reference materials may be consulted to verify key details like the etymologies or histories of words or the backstories of specific characters. In addition, feel free to use the DLB articles or Carsons Eros the Bittersweet essay (she calls it an essay even as it is published as a book) to advance your ideas. Be clear that all quotations and paraphrases of any kind, from any sources must always be fully and accurately cited. Overall, the challenge here is to isolate a theme in Sappho or Sophocles that moves youand then build an argument about how this theme gets developed, explored, or deployed by the author/translator. With Sappho you may use as many poems/fragments as you need to make your argument. The personal (I) may be used to frame or introduce your unique engagement with the idea/issue or text in question, but you should not overly depend on first person expression. Likewise, you may need to frame an issue or explain a backstory, but you should not overly narrate plot. This is an analysis of a text at the point of an idea or question important to you; the paper needs to be in your voice. Furthermore, I strongly encourage the use of epigraphs as a way to jump start the essay.

Reliability and Decision Theory

The supplement to Chapter 5 in the textbook (Operations Management_Irwin_Operations Decision) describes and develops several decision trees. In a paper, develop a decision tree for the case described. Explain the process of developing a decision tree; draw the decision tree (include the decision tree in an appendix showing chance nodes, probabilities, outcomes, expected values, and net expected value); and defend your final decision based on your decision tree.

Case for considerationAn operations manager for a cereal producer is faced with a choice of:

A large-scale investment (A) to purchase a new cooker which could produce a substantial pay-off in terms of increased revenue net of costs but requires an investment of 3,750,000 Saudi Riyal. After extensive market research it is thought that there is a 40% chance that a pay-off of 9,375,000 Saudi Riyal will be realized, but there is a 60% chance that it will be only 3,000,000 Saudi Riyal.
A smaller scale project (B) to refurbish an existing cooker. At 1,875,000 Saudi Riyal, this option is less costly but produces a lower pay-off. Again, extensive research data suggests a 30% chance of a gain of 3,750,000 Saudi Riyal but a 70% chance of it being only 1,875,000 Saudi Riyal.
Continuing the present operation without change (C) which cost nothing, but produces no pay-off.

Be sure to use at least two scholarly, peer-reviewed references in supporting your answer. Current sources are those published within the most recent five-year period, and scholarly sources are those from peer-reviewed journals.

Make certain for each listed reference that you have at least one supporting citation in the body of your content. Your reference page is always the last page of the submission where all individual references get listed.
