The two papers will constitute 30% of the course grade. The length of each paper is a minimum of 5 pages (typed and paginated, double-spaced, using a font no larger than 12 points, with margins no greater than one inch). When citing sources (including personal interviews), use a consistent academically accepted format for footnotes, citations and reference pages (MLA, APA, APSA, etc). Paper 1 (15% of the course grade) is a look at the 1917 Camp Logan riot in Houston and a comparison to another conflict in Houston. First, watch Mutiny on the Bayou. Your paper will address the following: 1. Briefly describe the main events of the Camp Logan riot and aftermath (no more than two pages). Also, include Houstons demographics in terms of race/ethnicity in 1910 or 1920 (closest census years). 2. Identify another riot or conflict in Houston in the 20th century and explain the event. Include the demographics of Houston at the time of the incident. 3. What are the similarities between the Camp Logan riot and the conflict you identified? What are the differences? 4. What are some possible reasons that Houston has escaped the level of violence found in many cities? Paper 1 should be a minimum of 5 pages (typed and paginated, double-spaced, using a font no larger than 12 points, with margins no greater than one inch). It is due on September 25. Students will also engage in a discussion about their findings on September 25 (a portion of the papers grade will be for participating in the discussion). Late papers will lose 5 points per calendar day.
