Demonstrate Ethical and Professional Behavior, Dimensions KVSCA; C2): Engage Diversity and Difference in Practice, Dimensions KVSCA; C3): Advance Human Rights and Social, Economic, and Environmental Justice, Dimensions KVSCA. For this assignment, students are assigned two possible groups from which to select one group experiencing disenfranchisement. This group must reflect social identities different from that of the student. The instructor reserves the right to have the final decision regarding group selection. In order to increase knowledge and skills related to cultural sensitivity and cultural competence, Students will conduct library research and concisely discuss the following: 1) Address the groups history, current demographic description, experiences of historical and current oppression, and relevant social justice issues. In discussion of oppressions experienced by this group, identify and thoughtfully discuss at least three (3) levels of oppression (e.g. structural, cultural, institutional, financial, interpersonal, etc.). 2) What form of resistance did the group use to deal with oppression (e.g. civil rights actions, struggles for social justice, historical successes in gaining civil rights, leaders of movements)? Be clear and specific. 3) Identify at least two (2) myths and stereotypes imposed upon this group and how these impact the groups experiences of oppression, disempowerment, and resilience. 4) Write in depth about the way race, racism, and white privilege intersect with the social location in the lived experience of people in this group. 5) What needs to happen to make communities of people more understanding and responsive to this group? For the next three set of questions, focus on your self-awareness and professional development using the first person (I). 6) Describe the development of your beliefs, attitudes, and treatment towards difference in general, and specifically towards this group. Include reflections and experiences regarding racial heritage and ethnic identity, socio-economic status, migration/immigration, language, religious affiliation, and other dimensions of diversity. 7) What kind of messages (verbal and non-verbal) did you receive about people who were different from you? Identify and discuss biases you have regarding this group. 8) If you were to work with members of this group experiencing marginalization, identify and discuss what attitudes, biases, beliefs, experiences and/or skill deficits may limit your effectiveness as a social worker and as a social justice agent of change. How would these biases influence the way in which you interact with members of this group? What changes would you make to enhance your knowledge, skills, and understanding of the group? What potential strengths do you bring to working with this group? Requirements Seven to nine (7-9) double-spaced pages, with 1 margins, with running head. No abstract is necessary.
