After you complete your paper, prepare a 5-10 minute presentation using PowerPoint to summarize your findings.
Critics of Martin Luther King Jr.s Letter from Birmingham Jail typically agree that the text is persuasive because King was keenly aware of who his audiences were, and knew what kind of rhetorical appeals would be most effective to persuade them. On the Discussion Board, we have already looked at how King hoped to reach a wide variety of people with this letter; King considered it a manifesto of sorts, a careful and considerate argument that he hoped would demonstrate that nonviolent resistance was the best way to end Jim Crow segregation. If King had simply wished to persuade people or Americans, the letter would have been too vague and general to be effective.
Now that we understand the rhetorical situation, your next assignment is to write an essay in which you argue for which section or paragraph of the letter is the strongest in Kings argument.
To make your case, use Aristotles framework for understanding rhetorical appeals (logos, pathos, and ethos), and write about how King deploys one or more of these appeals to persuade his readers. Is King at his best when he is using pathos? What about when he focuses on making logos or ethos appeals? Not only do you have to define what strongest means in this paper, but you also need to support your claim with evidence from the letter, showing who King is wanting to persuade, and which rhetorical appeal (or appeals) he depends on to accomplish this feat.
The object is to prepare a field guide of the type used in the National Parks, by describing and photographing a minimum of three sites in the park, each of which contains a different rock family. Each site must be a well exposed rock outcrop, not a boulder or loose gravel. The report must typewritten.
The outline must include a list of 3 sites, each with a different rock family, and must include for each site: Location, Rock Family, Rock Name.

For the communist Manifesto, only pages 2-3, 14-34, 36-54, need to be read
Both Martineau and Karl Marx had theories of i) how best to study society (where to look) ii) progress, and iii) equity.
Imagine you are out for coffee with Harriett Martineau and Karl Marx. After a few coffees, Marx throws out the following provocation: Capitalism is changing the material circumstances of our lives! If we are to have progress and equality, the workers need to revolt! We need to change class relations! After a long pause, Martineau takes a deep breath and responds to Marx.
What do you think she would say to Marx? What would Marx say back to her? What might they agree or disagree on?
Write a persuasive essay articulating how Martineau would respond to Marxs challenge, and how Marx would answer Martineau.
In your essay, be sure to:
1) briefly explain Marx and Martineaus beliefs about how society will have progress and equality,
2) make an argument, grounded in her writings (and lecture material), about how Martineau would respond to Marxs arguments,
3) make an argument, grounded in his writings, about how Marx would reply to Martineaus points.
An excellent answer offers a brief summary of the authors goals, discusses similarities and differences between the authors — shows thoughtfulness in how the authors fit together, and/or where they do not. An excellent paper uses the original readings as evidence. An excellent paper might discuss why these differences matter, why they exist in the first place, or why they are significant sociologically. An excellent answer may link the authors together or ideas from previous weeks to discuss how the ideas are related, and why this matters. Concepts are clearly defined, linked where appropriate. Demonstrates solid understanding of the major themes from the class, using readings and lectures to engage the comparison.

Fortunately, not every organization will face a major compliance scandal. This does not mean, however, that otherwise healthy firms cannot benefit from a compliance culture. The purpose of this assignment is to evaluate an otherwise functioning organization from a compliance perspective. The purpose of this assignment is to evaluate the effectiveness of the firms ethics and compliance programs. I recommend (but do not require) choosing a large and publicly traded company for this assignment. The alternative is to select your hypothetical company. In that way you will most likely have sufficient public information with which to write a suitable paper. However, if you have a firm with whom you have a specific relationship or specific knowledge, you may choose to write about that company after first obtaining my approval. The goal of this project is not simply to summarize compliance. Only summarize the firms compliance function as is necessary, and do not go into unnecessary length summarizing what the compliance function is and does. Rather, this paper must evaluate the firms compliance function for its strengths and weaknesses, citing specific features of the firms compliance program as well as specific examples of where the firm has displayed success or problems. In other words, put yourself in the position of a compliance manager (not a CCO or CEO), and present a proposal of how you would change the compliance function to add value, reduce risk, and build a culture of integrity. This paper could evaluate various aspects of compliance, including regulatory compliance, compliance processes, and organizational structure of the compliance function. This paper could also evaluate business ethics, corporate responsibility, management of legal risk, sustainability, and/or human rights as they relate to the compliance function. Do not attempt to cover all facets of compliance at once. It is preferable that you focus on one or two aspects of a firms compliance function in depth rather than try to cover the entire function 8 superficially. This promotes a deeper analysis and a more complex expression of your understanding of compliance. The paper must also include recommendations for reform and improvement of compliance. No firm is perfect, and the paper should contain concrete and realistic proposals that the firm should implement to improve their compliance. Budgets are tight and no firms resources are unlimited, so the paper should take cost and feasibility into account when making such recommendations. This paper is individually written, and must be no longer than six (6) thoughtful and analytical double-spaced pages (excluding references and appendices). Make each sentence count. Avoid unnecessary introductions, summaries, or block quotations.
