Mechanisms of Change and the Fossil Record

You learned about the negative impact of economic growth and human utilization of resources that can lead to global climate change and extinction. In your Case Assignment, you reviewed many pieces of evidence and developed your own conclusions about the relationship between human activities and global climate change. Now review the conclusions that have been drawn by NASA regarding this information at NASA Climate Part I: A Closer Look at the Evidence For the first part of this assignment, answer these questions using the NASA website: Describe the graph on the NASA website. What does it show us about the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere? According to the following site (the United Kingdom’s National Meteorological Service), what recent event contributed to the rising carbon dioxide levels? Met Office The supporting data on climate change are grouped into different categories on the NASA website. How are these groups labeled? Is there agreement on these categories between the NASA website and the UK website (Met Office). If not, how do they differ? Select the Effects tab at the top of this web page: https://climate.nasa.gov/evidence/. Summarize the effects of climate change listed here in one paragraph. Be sure to address the effect of climate change on our weather and water resources. Part II: How Can Economic Growth Become Part of the Solution? Read the article from The Economist: The outlook: Averting the sixth extinction. (2013). The Economist, 408(8853), 15. Available in the Trident Online Library. Now answer the following questions regarding economic growth and climate change discussed in this article in paragraph format. How does economic growth negatively impact other species? What is described as the principal threat to biodiversity as the global economy and human population grows? Is economic growth necessarily bad for our planet? What points suggest that economic growth can benefit biodiversity? Conclude your summary by drawing connections between economic growth, climate change, habitat loss, and biodiversity. SLP Assignment Expectations Organize this essay assignment using subtitles that summarize the topic from each question above. For example, to answer Question 1, use a descriptive subtitle like the following: Part I: A Closer Look at the Evidence/Recent Events. Answer each question under the subtitle using complete sentences that relate back to the question. Be sure to use APA formatting throughout your essay with 1-inch margins, 12-point type, and double spacing throughout. Include a title page, introduction, answers to the questions with subtitles, and concluding paragraph. Remember to include in-text citations within the body of the essay referencing your resources (e.g., Murray, 2014). Also, be sure to include a reference section at the end of your assignment listing all required readings and any additional resources you used to complete your essay. A helpful guide to writing a quality essay can be found in Trident’s Student Guide to Writing a High-Quality Academic Paper. This guide also provides links to example essays written in APA format. Direct quotes should be limited and must be designated by quotation marks. Paraphrased ideas must give credit to the original author, for example: (Murray, 2014). Direct copying from homework help websites will not receive credit. Once you have completed your assignment within a Word document, please upload your final version to the SLP 2 Dropbox. Please also note your Turnitin originality score and make revisions as needed. Please contact your instructor with any questions. Background SLP Info Climate change: How do we know? (n.d.). Students are required to write a 1000 word paper responding to the following journal article:Katz, Stephen & Calasanti, Toni (2015). Critical perspectives on successful aging: Does it “appeal more than it illuminates”? The Gerontologist 55(1):23-33.In this response, students should critically reflect on, and respond to, the key arguments presented. This is not a descriptive summary of the paper, but an opportunity to engage with the text, to think critically about the ideas presented, and to consider whether (and how) the arguments are compelling/persuasive/useful. In doing so, you might want to consider how this research advances your understanding of successful ageing, individual control and the implications of thinking about ageing in these terms.

Expand the discussion -“Mitigation Tools” and Mitigation Best Practices and Resources

Jennifer Chapter 11 Chapter 11 of the Hazard Mitigation in Emergency Management textbook is all about Hazard Mitigation tools and map products. A few takeaways, thoughts, or questions I had are: The two-second tidbit of each program was okay. I wish there was a 30-second or slightly longer video (almost like a promo) on each of these. None of the descriptions provided made me jump up and down, want to look further into them, or to try and learn them. Which is sad, because outside of this book, I have tried a couple GIS tools and do what to learn more about this topic. In case you got to this chapter and also were underwhelmed, here are a few things (not mitigation specific) an emergency manager may want to ask their GIS people to make a map of: o Events where are emergency personnel, decontamination areas, and major agency command locations. What roads are open and which hospitals are at what level support. o Incident where did the incident happen, what roads are closed, where are emergency personnel and the command post(s) staged, what are the hot/cold zones, where are the shelters, etc. o Recovery what are the damage assessments of the area overlaid with the clients who have come in for casework (this helps to see where more personalized outreach may need to be conducted) Overall, this book really did an underwhelming job in this chapter. It felt more like a last minute (hey we forgot to include this!) section, than a well-thought out chapter. Chapter 12 Chapter 12 of the Hazard Mitigation in Emergency Management textbook is all about mitigation best practices in the United States, putting the best practices into a plan, and the best practices in other countries, A few takeaways, thoughts, or questions I had are: Is anyone else having a difficult time writing something nice about this chapter? I was hoping to see best practices, not pats on the pack. This chapter feels very much like FEMA wrote it. Canadas portion was interesting. I like how they are working with aborigines leaders. Australias incorporation of animal protection during disasters is fascinating. Im really curious as to what or how they incorporate this type of animal measures into their training, drills, and plans. The available resources is a very thorough list. I hope to make time to review a few of them before I return this book. Overall, Chapter 12 did not meet the mark on what it said it would accomplish: best practices and putting them into place, nationally and internationally. References Islam, T., & Ryan, J. (2015). Create Variable Control Charts

Control charts assist health care administration leaders in determining which processes in their health services organization are in control. As a tool, creating variable control charts such as the Xbar and R charts are useful since they help to present the data in meaningful ways, which allow health care administration leaders to make quick decisions regarding those processes not in control. For this Assignment, review the resources for this week that are specific to variable control charts. Focus on mimicking the development of the Xbar and R charts in the chapter rather than the Xbar and S charts or I-MR charts. Expansion of Mental Health Services: Business Plan

Under the ACA, the expansion of behavioral health services is mandated for health care organizations. Whether your current health care organization already offers these types of behavioral services, or whether it will need to begin offering these types of behavioral health services, is subject to evaluation and goal setting by both the health care executive and the board of directors. As a current or future health care executive, you will likely engage in developing business plans for new initiatives and health care delivery service flows in your health care organization. With the recent move to address expanded behavioral health services in health care organizations, developing a business plan for expanded behavioral health services is both timely and appropriate. Review the resources for this week and review the business plan template for this Assignment. (ATTACHED) Reflect on the major considerations your health care leadership group members will need to keep in mind when developing a business plan for the expansion of either mental health or substance abuse services in a healthcare organization. The Assignment: (5 pages) –The ACA has provided for increased coverage of mental health. However, there remains a shortage of these services in healthcare organizations. –Your role as a healthcare leadership group is to evaluate opportunities for behavioral health initiatives.
