Globalization and Modern Systems of Slavery This course represents an attempt to understand the reality of globalization from an interdisciplinary perspective. Concretely, this means that in analyzing a variety of phenomena associated with the globalization process, we consider the economic, political, social, cultural and psychological aspects of this reality, to the extent that this is possible. In directing our attention to modern systems of slavery, the book, Disposable People, proposes that we apply an interdisciplinary perspective in our attempt to understand the emergence and spread of this complex phenomenon in the modern world. As students of this book, you will need to write a four-page paper that demonstrates how the “new slavery” is truly an interdisciplinary reality, i.e., that it responds to or contains forces that are economic, political, socio- cultural, and/or psychological. In doing this, you show also indicate ways in which this approach can provide us with a deeper understanding of slavery than we would get if we were to use only one discipline (the economy, for example). Having done this, you then need to consider if and in what ways an interdisciplinary understanding of modern slavery could be helpful in any attempt to come to terms with slavery in the modern world.
