This is what my English teacher put: Though the essay must address the topic, you should feel free to focus on an aspect of the topic that interests you, and not take the question too literally. For example, The essay might consider how a career can help shape you as a person, the social aspect of a career (marriage, friends, networking, etc.), the value that a career holds for a man vs. for a woman, or any other focus of your choosing.
Discuss a critical issue related to a healthcare disparity. Consider your facility and the organizational culture. Ideas for discussion include questions such as: What are the strengths and weaknesses of the facility in addressing the issue of concern? What needs to change to meet some of the challenges identified? As a nurse leader, what steps could you take to affect the issues of concern?
The purpose of this individual assignment is two-fold:

Find 6 sources relevant to your final essay global event.
The sources must come from the specific formats of the information listed below: scholarly article, web site, newspaper, etc. The annotated bibliography will be posted on Canvas.
RULE: Sources must be listed in a bibliography following the rules of MLA style.
Each citation must have an annotation. An annotation is a summary and evaluation
of a source about 3-5 sentences long.
To do an annotation, you must be familiar with the form and content of the source.
If the source is an article, read (or at least skim) it. If its a book, read the table of
contents, some of the introduction, and skim a few relevant chapters. If its a
website, read the About section, the home page, and explore a few links.
The idea is to know enough to determine if it fits your thesis argument and is a
good source.
NOTE: If you change your topic, you do not need to resubmit the bibliography. If
you change sources during your research, thats OK, too. The final bibliography
will be part of your final essay.
Sources
Find 6 sources, one from each of the formats listed below. Use MLA for your citations,
followed by the annotation.
Be sure to include the database/catalog/website in which it was found (i.e., Proquest,
PsycINFO, Academic OneFile, etc.).
Sources 1-3 must be from an FIU Library database or FIU Library catalog:
1. One book published in the last 20 years
2. Journal article in a scholarly journal
3. One article in a popular or trade magazine
Sources 4-6 can be from an FIU Library database, the FIU Library Catalog, or the
Web:
4. One article from a newspaper published in the country of your topic (must be in English)
5. A good website. Jokes4Us.com is not a good website. Wikipedia is questionable.
The Census Bureau is a good site.
6. One good source of your choice.
Your sources will be graded using the following criteria:
Timeliness.
When was it published? Has the world changed so much that the information there is outdated or irrelevant?
Accuracy.
How well-supported is the source with facts? Are those facts still
correct?
Authority.
Who or what provided the information? The Onion is an authority on
humor, but not on facts.
Relevance.
Does the source relate to your topic? If youre writing about the Las
Vegas shooting or Charlottesville marches, visitor guides for those cities are
irrelevant.
Quality of annotation.
Provide complete information.
The first 4 criteria are explained in the FIU tutorials (see the section on Evaluating
Information). The relevance criteria are determined by how pertinent your source.

How can you use these dimensions in describing the cultures of both the student and the professor?
The phrase inshaAllah has been studied by many scholars interested in Anglo-Arab communication and it has many interpretations which of these interpretations do you adopt and why? Why do you as a young Kuwaiti use this phrase? Please give examples.
1. Choose one of the academic journal articles posted in connection with the texts. (You may also find an article of your own; please clear it with me at least 5 days before the due date.) Your essay will include a brief summary (3 4 sentences) of the article, but it will mostly be a response to the critics interpretation or analysis. Here you can take a couple of approaches:
a) To what extent do you agree with the authors interpretation?
b) How does this article change your reading of the text?
You will need a clear thesis and multiple supporting points. Use quotations from the original text as well as from the journal article to support your response. This kind of essay follows an approach described as They say, I say. (Theres a whole book on academic writing with this title.) Your essay is a conversation between you and the critic: what the critic says, what you say in response. Where you disagree, explain why. Where you agree (and this is harder), you have to do more than say, Yeah. What she said. You have to show what ELSE in the text makes you agree with the critics point.
2. Compare one of the texts we have studied this term to a modern retelling or interpretation. In your analysis, focus on how one aspect (scene, character, image, etc.) in the modern interpretation introduces or foregrounds a different perspective or value and explain how this new element speaks to a modern audience.
Prove the thesis, that when women have economic opportunity and work (at non-agricultural jobs), violence in a community decreases, because when women have stronger economic voices, they have more of peaceful influence in their community.
Term papers are to focus upon the Canadian Criminal Justice System. Possible topics include:
1. Describe how one part of the Criminal Justice System functions and if it is effective
2. Discuss role conflicts between two parts of the Criminal Justice System.
3. Any other Criminal Justice topic agreed to in advance by the professor.
Examples: The Community Policing model improves Police relations with the public; The Prime Minister should not choose Supreme Court Judges; Despite government directions, Police are continuing to use the practice of carding; The Police need better training in managing mentally ill offenders; Aboriginal Canadians are routinely denied their Chart Rights; Problem Solving Courts should be used more extensively in Canada; The Defense should be bound by the same rules of disclosure as the Crown; More offenders should receive parole. The paper must be double spaced, 3-5 pages in length, excluding cover page and references. It is to be presented in appropriate academic style, using APA format and a font size not in excess of 12. You must use the text and at least one other academic source.
1. Develop an argumentative topic and then thesis based on the topic listed below. You will be both evaluating the article AND arguing either that the author is right or that the author is wrong. 2. You must use at least one quote from the article within your essay. 3. Avoid logical fallacies. 4. Support your points and refute the opposing viewpoints with evidence from other sources. In other words, use research material to support your points. Your sources should include at least one scholarly/academic journal and one book, even if it is a reference book, as well as an article from one of the librarys databases, among other sources. (This should be in addition to the one from the scholarly/academic journal, which you will probably also find on a database.)
5. You must use at least five sources. 6. The article you are evaluating and arguing for or against does not count as one of these sources. (You may use as many over and beyond five as you wish.) 7. Cite your sources (including the article/essay you are evaluating and arguing for or against) correctly according to the 8th edition MLA documentation style using in-text and/or parenthetical citations in your essay, as well as in a Works Cited list at the end of the paper. Errors in your citations will seriously damage your grade. 8. Note: Wikipedia is not a valid academic resource! You may not use it! And though you may quote from a dictionary in your paper, a dictionary does not count as one of your required resources (though you do have to cite it if you use it).
Topic:
Find an argumentative opinion/editorial/op-ed column from a reputable newspaper or magazine (not a TV or streaming video one). It must have been published after September 1st, 2019. Argue whether or not the author is right in his/her argument, and use the strengths and/or weaknesses of the argument to support your points either in your reasoning or through refutation. If you argue that the author is right, you must add substantially to that person’s argument.
Note: Make sure you find an article that is an actual argument and an editorial/opinion/or op-ed article from a newspaper or magazine. You may NOT use a news article or one that is just analyzing something. You also may NOT use a letter-to-the-editor.
Writing Assignment 3: Making an Argument
Using the techniques described in chapters 1-11 and 15, write a paper in which you make an argument about higher education. You should choose ONE of the questions below:
1. Does American society value technical education and/or blue-collar careers?
2. Is a college education worth the cost?
3. Does it make more sense to choose a community/state college like PBSC or a 4-year university?
4. Choose your own topic (subject to approval)
Note: If you choose a topic without prior approval, you will earn a 0 for the assignment.
Your thesis statement will be your answer to one of these questions. You MUST pick a side on your chosen topic make an argument and support it throughout your paper. Your paper should also include 1 paragraph of counterargument: Present a possible counterargument and refute it.
The support for your argument MUST come from 3 essays in the textbook and/or the They Say, I Say Blog. These essays should come from the topic Is College the Best Option? (Chapter 17 in the textbook). Your paper should include specific quotes/examples from your ALL of your chosen essays.
