The Japanese Sinologist Naito Torajiro regards the Chinese Song Dynasty as the beginning of Chinese modernity, but many scholars see in Song Dynasty China only “changes within tradition.” Critically discuss two issues in the Naito Torajiro’s hypothesis to illustrate how the Song Dynasty made significant progresses over the previous periods in Chinese history and put China ahead in global context, although some traditional elements remained prominent.
