Written assessment, length ca. 2000 words (60%). The essay should discuss the relationships between key industry representatives and interest groups and how they impact the music industry. Students are required to formulate their own topic for this assessment. The essay should be clearly written and presented, and follow the Chicago referencing style. The written assignment must reference key terms and concepts presented throughout the semester and will be assessed on- Explanation, analysis, demonstration and discussion of how: Interest groups relate and work together in the music industry 16% Contemporary shifts impact potential developments in music businesses 16% Economies of the music industry 16% Clarity of argument and validation of subject matter covered 8% Effective academic technique including referencing and citation (links below) 4% You should be aware of many of the big concepts the idea of connecting creators of music with audiences for music, the concept of the music industry as a service industry, the understanding of the functions of the recorded music industry (and how they have evolved). More specifically you know the roles of record companies (major and independent), the role of managers and agents. You understand some of the impacts of digitisation. You understand the importance of the law of copyright in the context of the music industries. What will set you apart and help you achieve a great result will be if you can show me that you understand the concepts, understand the linkages between participants, understand the changing roles of the various players and maybe have some insight into the future. Having an actual opinion will be rewarded!
