Debate: The U.S. Constitution

The U.S. Constitution continues to stir the same amount of controversy as it did when it was first being written in 1787. The Founding Fathers and their intentions has long been a source of historical and political intrigue that historians and politicians are still debating. As an economic history class we will be examining the Constitution as an economic document. Attached is the brief introductory lecture to the Constitution explaining some basic background should give you some context to the writing of the single most important document in U.S. History.. In addition, I will be providing you with a link: https://mrtylerslessons.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/primary-reading-taking-sides-were-the-founding-father-democratic-reformers.pdf, to two very different perspectives on the Constitution. The link comes from a basic question raised in U.S. Economic History: Were the Founding Fathers democratic reformers or were they protecting their own economic interest? The YES response comes from John P. Roche, a political scientist, who views the Constitution strictly as a working form of government. The NO response comes from historian Howard Zinn who uses a more economic and social perspective. For this assignment you will need to provide a summary of the argument that is made by John P. Roche and Howard Zinn (about 2 paragraphs for each summary). You will also need to give your own opinion as to which author you believe makes the most convincing argument (1-2 paragraphs). No sources need to be cited for this assignment. You are only to use the lecture, and the link to the two articles. Please read provided instructions and documentation thoroughly to complete this assignment.

World Trade Organisation- Masters

In your Final Project you will be submitting a detailed Report which addresses the following question: The Sutherland Report observed that decades after the founding of the GATT, MFN is no longer the rule; it is almost the exception. Certainly, much trade between the major economies is still conducted on an MFN basis. However, what has been termed the spaghetti bowl of customs unions, common markets, regional and bilateral free trade areas, preferences and endless assortment of miscellaneous trade deals has almost reached the point where MFN treatment is exceptional treatment. Certainly the term might now be better defined as LFN, Least-Favoured-Nation treatment. (Peter D. Sutherland et al, The Future of the WTO: Addressing Institutional Challenges in the New Millennium, Report by the Consultative Board to the Director-General Supachai Panitchpakdi, Geneva: World Trade Organisation, (2004), p.19) Present a critical discussion and analysis regarding the validity of the quoted assertion in the Sutherland Report. The project must address the alleged proliferation of customs unions, common markets, and regional and bilateral free trade areas, their consistency with WTO law and assess their detrimental or beneficial effects on international trade in general and the MFN requirement in particular.

Then, using the principle of justice, evaluate the research you have gathered thus far to determine if subject selection followed this principle. Some aspects of this principle you will reflect on are:

Does the subject selection sufficiently reflect diversity to make the results of the study generalizable to a general population? Pay attention to specific areas such as age, gender etc.
Were individuals chosen as participants who can expect to benefit from the study?
In the case that a diverse group was chosen as the only participants, does this reflect a particular logic or reasoning from within the study, or does this reflect a convenience selection?
These and other issues should be addressed in your paper.
