Choose one of these options. Within each of these options, you should use a range of primary sources from the Reader that span a century or more of American history. TOPIC OPTION 1: The discourse (argument) over the meaning of liberty in America. How did different writers/groups define the word? Did this change over time or location or other factors? What kinds of conflict grew from disagreements over liberty? (Note: for this essay, you can consider the words liberty and freedom to be interchangeable.) TOPIC OPTION 2: The public discourse about slavery: arguments against, and in favor of, the institution of slavery in America, and the historical impact these arguments may have had. TOPIC OPTION 3:How the roles and opportunities available to women changed (or didnt change) from the earliest colonial times into the mid-1800s; how women reacted and responded; and their impact on American history. TOPIC OPTION X: If you would prefer to write on a different topic, you are welcome to propose a topic for me. Be sure that your chosen topic is within the span of American history from colonial times through 1877, and is well-enough represented in the Reader so that youll have material to work with. If you’re experienced with research papers, you can propose using outside primary sources. Feel free to propose something, and we can talk it over. (But I get the final word.)
