WRITTEN RESEARCH PROPOSAL Length: 4000 words Format: APA (6th edition) style referencing Your written research proposal should contain the following sections: 1. Title: Your title should be short and concise. It should summarise what your research is about. 2. Introduction: An introduction section outlines why you chose your topic. The section should include: 1. The rationale for the study- why it is important – ensure this is referenced to the literature. 2. How your research will contribute to the field. 3. Include a clear statement of the research question/hypothesis – What is the research question you are trying to find the answer to? 4. State the research aims (proposed outcomes) and objectives (tasks you will perform to achieve the aims). 3. Background (brief summary of the relevant research): This section should highlight trends in the literature relating to your research topic. You need to draw on the relevant literature to justify your own research. Indicate the gaps your research is addressing and note the original contribution it will make to the field in general. Do not copy and paste the entire literature review submitted for assignment one, it needs to be a condensed to no more than one page. 4. Methodology & methods: In describing your methodological approach, you need to draw on relevant literature and consider the strengths and limitations of your chosen methodology. You should describe the following: 1. Methodological Approach: e.g. a qualitative descriptive approach. 2. Research Design: e.g. experimental, quasi-experimental, cross sectional, longitudinal, case study, mixed methods. 3. Setting: Where will the research take place (Hospital? Community?) Will it be a single or multi-site study? 4. Participants: Who will you be doing your research with (patients, health professionals, communities)? What is your sampling strategy, and your proposed sample size? How will participants be recruited, and where from? What are your inclusion and exclusion criteria? 5. Data collection: How will you go about collecting your data (surveys, experiments, interviews, focus groups)? This section should also include any equipment or instruments that you will use. Describe in detail the procedure you will follow to collect your data. 6. Data analysis: How you will analyse the data? Include any tools you will use to assist you with analysis (e.g. computer software, models). 5. Ethical considerations: In this section, you should briefly outline your understanding of ethical issues associated with your research proposal (not research in general). Please provide a summary of all the ethical issues arising from your proposed project and explain how they are to be resolved. 6. Discussion & Implications: This is where you will explicitly state how your proposed research will advance knowledge. What are the expected outcomes of the research and importance of the work? Discuss, in general, how your proposed research will lead to a significant improvement over previous studies, and how it would benefit the field in terms of practice, policy, education etc. (In other words, why should someone care?) Indicate who will directly benefit. What are the limitations of your research proposal and how can these be minimised? Finally, you should end with a concise summary and conclusion. 7.
