Supreme Court Chart and Summary

Supreme Court Chart and Article Summary

1. Pick a Supreme Court Case
a. It must contain an Opinion of the Court and at least one Dissent
b. You may do cases that have to do with any of the Bill of Rights or the 14th Amendment (free speech, gun rights, search and seizure, rights of the accused, cruel and unusual punishment, cases about race, women, abortion, religion, etc.) You can also do cases about the executive branch (war powers, habeas corpus, treatment of detainees, issues in the military) or the commerce clause as it relates to civil rights.

2. Read the case carefully. Read the opinion of the court and one dissent. Ignore concurrences or additional dissents. Highlight or note the important passages. There may be much in the case that is technical. Dont worry about that stuff. Be on the look out for the big statements, especially those that show how the Court is interpreting the part of the Constitution in question. Notice the kind of quotes I picked in the examples I gave you.

3. Chart
a. In an excel document, input the Case information
i. Case name
ii. Case ID (e.g. 347 US 483)ackboar
iii. One-paragraph summary of the Facts of the case (in your own words)
iv. Constitutional Question (you can get from the opinion or websites like www.oyez.com, www.findlaw.com)
v. One paragraph summary in your own words of the holding. Include the vote count, 9-0, 8-1, 7-2, 6-3, 5-4 and a basic summary of the Courts answer to the constitutional question.

b. Then your document should have three columns one for the subject matter or issue, one for the Opinion of the Court and one for any one of the dissents. For this assignment, cut and paste only the most important quotations from the case as has been done in the example I have given. The key is to be able to match up points made in the dissent with points made in the Courts opinion. It is this upon which you will be graded. You should have at least 10 quotations for the Opinion of the Court and 10 quotations for the dissenters. Again, only include the most decisive quotations. The quotations should not be any longer than three sentences. Do not concern yourself with earlier Supreme Court decisions, or issues in the lower court decisions, just focus on quotes in the decision that analyze the constitution or make big statements about rights and justice.

c. Note that some cases are quite long. But once you find a good one, they are worth reading. Take your time to find the right case before you begin. Find a case about a subject in which you have some interest. If you find gun cases interesting, find a supreme court about gun rights. If you are interested in the abortion debate, find an abortion case. Older cases (pre-1975) tend to be shorter.

d. For the chart portion of the assignment, I have given you examples from Court cases that I have done. My examples are beyond what I expect from you, but it will give you a sense for what I am looking.

4. Read one high quality journal article about your case or the issue in your case (e.g. privacy, abortion, capital punishment). This article should be from law reviews or academic journals, etc.. The article must be at least 10 pages in length. On a separate page of the assignment (in a word document) summarize the article in two paragraphs in your own words. It should be well-written and be a clear presentation of the main argument of the author and his understanding of the case. Upload the article to the dropbox in the form of a PDF or a doc so I can read the article. Do not just include a link. You may not use material published as blogs or entries on websites. It must be a published article in a law review or a journal. For this part, you may use Lexis Nexus or JSTOR or any other academic search engine in the librarys electronic resources. You may also use an approved article sent to me by email ahead of time. If you have any doubt about whether your article is a good one, email me.

What are three concepts that stood out to you in this reading? Describe what each of these concepts mean (how they are defined in the reading, or your interpretation), and why they are meaningful to you.

Read the chapter by Wendy Makoons Geniusz, and consider the following questions:

1. What are three concepts that stood out to you in this reading? Describe what each of these concepts mean (how they are defined in the reading, or your interpretation), and why they are meaningful to you.

2. What are some of the practices that are part of ‘returning to yourself’, for you? How do you relate to the concept of biskaabiiyaang ?

3. What is a question you have about this reading? Is there anything that was unclear, or that you’d like to learn more about? Or, make a discussion question (a question you could ask to your peers, to spark discussion).

Distribution Robotics

Background

The single most important issue here is the growing need for technical repair and routine maintenance on mechanical robotics systems. Mechanical robotics have been innovatively introduced into the manufacturing industry to reduce cost and provide continual productivity efforts. Historically, robot applications have been limited to the automotive and electronic sectors. During the past decade, however, growth in material processing orders indicates that the robotics industry is discovering new avenues, particularly in consumer goods such as food, beverage and pharmaceuticals (Kirgis, 2007). The mixed industry integration for robotics helps create an increased need for the robotic repair and maintenance technician. Whether robotics is utilized in manufacturing, food and beverage, or other productive supply organizations, robotics are creating a growing market for support and substantive efforts.

Potential Consequences

Robotic integration from manufacturers have created a sustainable method for consistency and efficiency in routine operations. This however has also created a need for technical and mechanical influence in the workplace. Robots have come a long way, they still require regular maintenance to ensure peak performance, maximizing productivity and return on investments (Elkins, 2019). A robot is assigned an obligation to which it must operate within a manufacturing task. A robot is at an unknown position in an environment for which it has a map. It looks about its position, and based on these observations, it must infer the place (or set of places) in the map where it could be located (Guibas, Motwani, & Raghavan, 2017). This process creates issues with contiguous and alternative efforts otherwise needed for maintenance and programming solutions. Not only is programming and data input an issue, additional mechanical maintenance provides opportunities through this approach.

Proposed Solution

Mechanical maintenance on robotic equipment provides an important part of the organizations support system. Providing solutions to support the integrity of robotics in the manufacturing industry can best be looked at through understanding needs and efficiencies of robotics. Linking robot adoptions to firm-level task measures finds that robots are more prevalent at firms where employees are commonly doing manual tasks, but not those that require routine or abstract tasks (Cheng et al., 2019). More simply stated, providing less responsibilities from robotics allows organizations to more effectively and strategically produce mechanical efforts to support the robotic strategy. Robotic technicians have a greater impact when providing maintenance to these mechanical devices rather than working on programming activities that require more training for less impactful results. Additionally, robot usage creates areas of focus for continued and maintained development for future growth and definable needs for mechanical support. The need for technicians and support systems for robotics grows with the increased capabilities.

What did Marco Polo (and his co-author Rustichello) think that their reading audience would be most interested in?

Based on a careful reading of the text and Nigel Cliffs Introduction write an essay (about 1,200 words) in which you discuss how Marco Polo’s European readers might have reacted to the stories he told. Focus on the following sections of the text: The Prologue, Chapter 3, and Chapter 5.

Your essay should address MOST of the following questions or issues:

What did Marco Polo (and his co-author Rustichello) think that their reading audience would be most interested in?

How does Polo explain/describe things so that his European audience will understand them?

What does Polo say about his own point of view as a Venetian, a merchant and a Christian?

What can the poem tell us something about medieval attitudes to non-Christians, commerce, travel, violence, leadership, politics, and/or heroism?

Discuss the concept of capital and sources and uses of various types of capital in the development of an industrialized economy.

Please make an offer only if you are knowledgeable!

Answer Question 1 and any two others of the following questions. Write an 800 to 1200-word essay for each question answered. Use proper essay format and APA style citations throughout. References to the textbook (Heilbroner and Milberg) may suffice, though additional sources are welcome to be used as well, if you like. For each question answered, think what is the story here that I am trying to tell? then tell that story, drawing from references that you have cited, in a way that leads me to your conclusion. Total number of words expected: about 3,000.

1. A complex economy, with thousands of different jobs, and thousands of different products and services produced for sale seems inconceivable without the use of money of some kind. Does Heilbroner agree? Discuss various aspects of the monetization of economic activity between the first and the 21 st centuries.

2. Discuss the concept of capital and sources and uses of various types of capital in the development of an industrialized economy.

3. The capitalist economy is no longer an economy embedded in a society, comprising but one part of the larger society . It has, rather, embedded the whole society in the economy, turning a capitalist economy into an entire social culture and way of life based on maximizing materialism and profits. Discuss.

4. Discuss the how, the when, and the importance of Polanyis three fictitious commodities, in the development of economic society.

Course description: Modern society is dominated by economic concerns and economic exchange; hence it can be described as an Economic Society, in which society itself, the relations of people to one another, is largely determined by industrial, commercial and financial enterprise, especially corporate capitalist enterprise, and by the free-market system and the materialist ambition it engenders. This course in economic history is a critical exploration of the characteristics of modern Western economic society, and how they came to be over the last 500 years or so. The course first explores the concept of economic development itself: what are the principles that determine what does occur and what does not occur as societies and economies evolve? We then explore in more detail what factors in the 500-year history of capitalism were determinant in its evolution into the affluent, commercialized, industrialized Western society of today? It was not always so. Our study examines changes in philosophy, in technology, and in human institutions; the discovery and exploitation of natural resources; colonization; and scientific revolutions. In addition to professor-led lecture/discussions there will be student-led presentations on topics in the course.

How did you go about researching whether or not you should stay on your career path?

CAREER ANALYSIS ESSAY
Here is the formal Career Analysis Essay assignment sheet. While I cannot foresee
everything that has to do with the assignment or guarantee a wonderful handout
such as this for each paper, I hope this handout is helpful. Many of the activities
we complete during the week will help you with the writing process.
Requirements:
Length: Full five to seven pages
MLA format
Five sources cited in the body of the essay and on the works cited page
Sections and information to include in your essay:
Background
Thesis
Criteria for Determining Whether I Should Continue on my Current Career
Path, (insert current career path), or Change
Research Methods
Research Findings
Future Outlook
Works Cited Page
Heres a little bit about each section:
Background: In this section, please include a short introduction that
discusses why you initially wanted to pursue a career in this field. What were
your initial assumptions about this career before you began your research?
Did you have concerns about this field?
Make sure your information flows in one smooth paragraph or more and
always write in complete sentences. Do not copy the questions. Rather, use
clear topic sentences.
Thesis: You are determining if you should remain on your current career path
or change. You will do the research first and then make your decision. Once
you have made your decision, you will be ready to write your thesis. Your
thesis would look something like this:
Career Analysis Essay 2
Based on my research, I should stay on my current career path because
X, X, and X (criteria) or Based on my research, I should change
my current career path because X, X, and X (criteria).
Research Methods: In this section, you will discuss what kind of research
you did. You might think of it as answering this question:
-How did you go about researching whether or not you should stay on your
career path? What sources did you use? What keywords helped you retrieve
sources? How do you ensure that these sources were credible?
Be sure to discuss your research process and the sources you retrieved. If you
read in a book or books, discuss those texts and the titles. If you searched on
the Internet, discuss the title or titles of the websites (not the addresses).
Italicize all titles of books, websites, newspaper titles, and journals.
Place essay titles and article titles between quotation marks.
Criteria for Determining Whether I Should Continue on my Current Career
Path or Change: In order to support your thesis, you need to do research.
You would base this research on the criteria you have chosen. Here are some
examples:
employability–How easy would it be to get a job in your field? How
soon you could get a job?
salary–How much money would you make?
job satisfaction–How satisfied would you be in your field?
types of people you would work with/workplace community
distance from home (Would you have to move in order to find a job in
your field, or could you get a job around where you live now? What
would your commute be like?)
schedule and work/life balance (would you work on a shift schedule
or a more regular schedule? How much time will you have for
personal pursuits?)
variance in job duties (would you do the same thing most of the time,
or would you have different job duties?)
These are just examples. You are welcome to choose other criteria than
those I provided here.
Career Analysis Essay 3
Research Findings: This section should include fully developed individual
paragraphs. Each criterion should have its own heading and should be in
paragraph form. One criterias discussion could exceed one paragraph. Your
paragraphs should discuss what the criterion is, why this criterion is important,
what you learned through the research process, and how the research influences
your assumptions/expectations about the career. As you discuss your research
findings you should include summaries, paraphrased material, and direct quotes
when necessary. Remember, you should include in-text citations that correlate
with your works cited entries. Review the MLA folder materials and your text.
Example Research Findings Section:
Criterion Section: Salary
Through my research into a civil engineer career, I learned that salary is not
the most important aspect of my career choice. I always thought that making
more money would lead to more happiness. However, an article in Forbes
magazine, a leading business publication, said, Work-life balance is the
most important factor in job selection for the millennial generation. This
generation is less interested in money than having time for family and
friends (Johnson 43). A second source on the Collegiate Careers Web site
substantiates this finding: Jobs seekers today are breaking the mold of past
generations and business organizations are responding to their new value
sets (Breaking the Mold par. 6). The Collegiate Careers article
emphasizes what Johnson refers to as a work-life balance. This new insight
shifted my assumptions about what I want it a career. While salary is
important, it cannot replace the value of interpersonal relationships.
Engineers not only make up to ninety-thousand dollars a year, but they also
can work a standard schedule that allows one to spend time on personal
interests (Herntin 87).
**Notice how the research is smoothly integrated into the paragraph. It is
used to support the writers claims about the criterion and its importance**
Be sure to be thorough in telling what you learned. Dont skimp on this
section. You should, as the example above demonstrates, maintain an
academic voice and integrate research to prove your points. This is the
longest section of your paper. Be sure to cite what you have learned as we
have discussed in class. If you find a source that gives you a one-sentence
answer, which is likely with salary, check another source as well to verify
Career Analysis Essay 4
what you have learned and to make your information more convincing. Be
sure to cite all quotations and paraphrases.
A note about academic voice:
-Rather than writing I selected three criteria and researched them . . .
you should write:
Research into three criteria revealed new information and insights
that . . .
**Notice how the second example removes the first person I which
changes the tone of the sentence and emphasizes the point of the sentence
the research**
Future Outlook: You have now studied your field extensively and made a
decision regarding whether or not you should remain in this field. In the next
essay, The Proposal, you will be identifying opportunities and challenges in
your field and planning additional research.
Based on your investigation of this career field, what opportunities or
challenges do you see? Are there potential concerns? Will there be any specific
changes or developments in this field?
Works Cited: (does not count toward page length) This section starts on a
separate page. Here, list the sources you used. Be sure to follow MLA citation
style (MLA).
Other Considerations:
The paper will count as 100 points. As with all college-level work, it should be
sound in grammar, mechanics, punctuation, usage, spelling, etc. These will
count significantly in the grade, and poor work in any of these areas can fail a
paper. Perhaps in classes you have had before the major concern was the
content, or what you would say. However, in a college-level English class, we
will not only be ensuring that the information is sound but also that it is
properly cited, that words are correctly spelled, that the punctuation is correct,
that sentences are well worded, etc. Therefore, check your paper carefully
before turning it in. Proofreading and editing are not always fun, but they make
a huge difference.
Career Analysis Essay 5
Do not forget to cite your sources in the text (in-text citations) and on the works
cited page. This requirement is imperative in academic writing.

What civic lessons can we learn from Aristotle’s participatory model of democracy to enhance citizenship today?

A good essay is well structured. At a minimum, every essay should have an opening paragraph, introducing the idea and basic argument. Subsequent paragraphs should be devoted to detailing the idea and supporting your argument with information from the course materials this serves to demonstrate that you both understand the topic which you are discussing, and can make a reasoned case for why your position is valid or true. Once you have completed your argument, it is always a good idea to recap your ideas and argument, revisiting them to again remind the reader of the original summary statement from the start of the essay.

Examination and Analysis. The body of your paper should focus on the examination and analysis of the essay question. Identify the authors you are discussing and provide a fair assessment of their contribution to the debate. Support your argument with textual evidence drawn from our required readings and insights gleaned from class discussions. Be sure to draw your own conclusions to form a compelling answer to the essay.
