The cinema arts can offer real-life depictions of physical illness and the challenges individuals, families and health care providers encounter. This assignment provides students the opportunity to view a film, critically consider clinical practice concepts pertinent to health care social work presented in this course, and apply these course concepts to pertinent characters in the film. That is, the patient in the film serves as your clinical case. Thus, the physically ill patient is the context by which you will frame your biopsychosocial clinical analysis.

2. Write an analysis that explicitly integrates course concepts as they apply to any three key characters in the film that comprise one of each of the following: patient, family member/ friend, health care provider.

This is a comparative analysis assignment, which means very little outside research is required. You are examining the coverage of an event or issue and not specifically the issue itself.

For example, U.S. President Donald Trump and whatever he has done or said now.

You can look at how Fox News, The Washington Post and the Toronto Star cover the issue. Where are the commonalities and where are the differences? Are bias on the part of the news outlet clear (dont go by reputation)? What are the biases?

If you are examining a Canadian issue or event (like the federal election), then be especially careful of using foreign sources there is a good chance they are republishing an article of video from a Canadian media outlet. One clue is who is credited as the author.

This is not an assignment that requires an in-depth study of womens rights or racism (the term paper is a more appropriate assignment for such work).

Now, something to keep in mind some news outlets use news services eg. Canadian Press, Associated Press, Reuters, etc. so the same story could appear in a number of outlets. If you are comparing broadcast coverage with print coverage, you will need to deal with the strengths and weaknesses of the platforms, as well.

Consider the precepts of Rudolf Flesch:

— Write mainly with active verbs

Three elementals factors of effective composition:

Abundance: Material is necessary. Generated through reading and research. Generated through thought and reflection. Much is abandoned and left behind. The best remains.

Word Choice: Consider Le Bon Mot. Concrete Nouns. Stout Adjectives. Action Verbs. Adverbs employed sparingly. Read it out loud. Your ear is a remarkable editor.

Cohesion: Develop ideas in specific detail. Support major details with minor details. Paragraphs speak to one another. Paragraphs agree with one another. Paragraphs argue with one another. Together, paragraphs develop, explore, and strengthen the main idea of the reading.

A Quick List from a Former Student:

When writing, always take a stand on any open questions.

With respect to the first draft, consider the ideas and insights generated by your mind map. These ideas can always be explored and expanded upon. That is the benefit of a solid mind map. You can pivot in virtual any direction with confidence. As long as you address a topic in specific detail and some reflection — think of the evidence and analysis structure of the MEAL Paragraph on a larger platform — your writing should be successful.

If, for example, you wish to discuss your courses, be specific with respect to what actually occurs in the classroom.

Consider a number of questions:

Where do you sit in the classroom? Why?

Do you take notes? Are they good notes? Is note taking new to you? Does that present a challenge?

Do you enjoy the class? Why? Classmates? Materials? Lectures? Classes at the end of the day are easier?

Do you not enjoy the class? Why? Be specific.

How does this class relate to your specific field of study? What is your field of study? Why? Have you always had an interest in that subject?

Some students select majors based on economic concerns. Others select majors based on comfort with the material or prior experience in high school that was positive. How might this apply to you?

You need not answer all these questions. You could focus primarily on study. All five parts are addressed, but often students lean into one of the the five headings.

Fundamentally, successful writing results from detailed responses to questions you ask yourself.

Gloss

Read and gloss the two reading. To gloss is to make notes in the margins of the reading that serve as highlights for you when you read the essay a second or third time. Consider what you believe to be the major point(s) of a paragraph and write a brief statement in the margins summarizing that selection of text. If there is a word that is unfamiliar to you, seek the definition of that word and write the definition of that word in the margins as well.

Glossing is an effective note-taking method that allows you to use your own words to understand a reading. Colored markers are ineffective for this task.

One reading, an excerpt from The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Malcolm X discusses the circumstances that led him to discover reading. He also discusses how he used the dictionary as a tool to aid him in his reading. Be certain to seek out the parts of the reading that discuss this and gloss them accordingly. The second reading, C.E.O. Libraries Reveal Keys to Success, introduces a number of C.E.O.s and their respective libraries. Do you see a developing theme in this reading? If so, be certain to gloss the material that supports this theme.

Brief Response Essay

The final sentence of the reading states: In fact, up to then, I never had been so truly free in my life. What does Malcolm X mean when he says this?

For Tuesday, write a brief response essay of no more than 1-2 pages that seeks to address this question. Your essay should be double spaced and proofread. In the context of the reading, what does freedom mean to Malcolm X? What does it mean to you? What evidence in the reading can you point to that would support your observations? Be certain to use your glossing to assist in the composition of this assignment.

Note: To receive credit for this assignment, you must include both articles (with evidence of glossing) with your response essay.
