Poetry Exploration

explore one of the poems listed on the second page. Your exploration should focus on some issue raised by the poem, or some question you might ask about the poem, that seems to you to be both interesting and complicated. It isnt sufficiently interesting to choose randomly three metaphors in a poem (without explaining what is significant about the three metaphors) and explore what each of them might mean because theres no obvious reason that someone whos read the poem would care about the metaphors that are your focus. It isnt sufficiently complicated (to choose an absurd example) to answer a question about how many times conjunctions are used within a poem no reader of a poem would ever care about the answer to such a question, and thus even a successful answer to the question would strike any reader of your paper as pointless.

How do you decide if an issue or question is worth exploring? The easiest way is to think about the kinds of issues or questions that the poem might raise for any informed reader of the poem, and then decide whether you can explore one of these issues or questions in a way that an informed reader might find persuasive. Your goal should not be to prove whatever you want to say about the poem. Rather, your goal should be to present your ideas in a way that is persuasive, which means (at the least) doing three things.

First, you must show how and why your specific points are connected to each other and help to develop the overall focus or argument of your paper.

Second, you must provide evidence for the claims that you are making, which means looking closely at how the words in the poem have led you to the claims that you are making. (Looking closely at the words can obviously include exploring how such things as tone, meter, and figural language enter into your claims about how the words of the poem should be understood.)

Third, you must quote frequently from the poem to support the claims that you are making, and you must show how and why the passages that you quote provide such support.

Two sample papers in your text on John Donne [pp. 824-826] and on Emily Dickinson [pp. 861-863] are good models for how to quote from poetry. Ive posted three sample papers in the Course Information module on Canvas, as well as a file that explains the rules for, and gives examples of, quoting from poetry. You should also look at the document Some Dos and Donts for Your Essay thats posted in the Course Information module.

The paper should be 1600 to 1700 words in length, and should be typed and double-spaced. The due date for the paper is Monday, October 7. The paper should be submitted to Canvas.

Your paper must be about one of these poems:
Robert Browning, My Last Duchess (pp. 726-727)
Robert Frost, Acquainted with the Night (p. 711)
Robert Hayden, Those Winter Sundays (p. 591)
John Keats, Ode on a Grecian Urn (pp. 660-661)
Philip Larkin, A Study of Reading Habits p. 601)
Luisa Lopez, Junior Year Abroad (pp. 1006-1007)
Elaine Magarrel, The Joy of Cooking (pp. 707-708)
Andrew Marvell, To His Coy Mistress (pp. 647-648)
Sharon Olds, Last Night (pp. 650-651)
Jim Stevens, Schizophrenia (pp. 703-704)

English 2001 Some Dos and Donts for Your Essay

1. Don’t begin your paper with general statements that don’t have a specific connection to whatever the focus of your paper is going to be. Heres an example of such a general statement: In the modern world, there is considerable disagreement about what love is.

2. Don’t end your paragraphs with a sentence whose only purpose is to announce whatever the focus of the next paragraph will be.

3. Don’t end your paper by simply restating things that you’ve already said.

4. Don’t make statements that undermine the persuasiveness of your own argument. Examples would be saying something like everyone has their own opinion about this, or all interpretation is subjective, or in my opinion.

5. You don’t have to have a thesis sentence, but you can certainly include a thesis sentence if you find it useful.

6. The focus of your paper needs to be the poem, and not yourself. If you say something like these words make me feel or this is my favorite part of the poem, then you are writing about yourself, and not about the poem.

7. Keep in mind that the audience for your paper (and this is true for all college writing) is an informed reader. What this means is that the reader of your paper knows, among other things, when the poem was written and what the poem is about, so these aren’t things that you need to include in your paper.

8. You don’t need to talk about everything in the poem, nor does the development of your discussion need to be based upon the progression of the poem.

9. Use the term the speaker rather than the author’s name to characterize who is saying the words of the poem. (Say the speaker expresses joy rather than Keats expresses joy) But you dont need to use the speaker as a basis for everything you discuss. For example, you could say the speakers feeling of love is complicated by its relationship to his fear of chronic anger. But you could also say the feeling of love is complicated by its relationship to a fear of chronic anger.

10. A speaker isnt like a character in a novel. Dont talk about whether the speaker is or is not making the correct choices, or whether the speaker should have thought differently or acted differently.

11. Dont argue that the poem expresses feelings or describes situations that we all can understand or relate to. Unless the issue is raised by the poem itself, theres no reason to address whether the poem is expressing feelings or describing situations that are familiar. (When such issues are raised in poems, the reason is usually to complicate or challenge our understanding of familiar feelings or situations.)

12. Don’t be afraid to take some chances with the paper. A paper that hasn’t quite figured out how to connect complicated ideas is always better than a paper that succeeds in completely connecting simple ideas. Keep in mind that you have as a safety net the opportunity to rewrite your paper after its graded and returned to you.

Identify and assess the risks and benefits to moving the supply chain to a global market. Be certain to analyze both the supplier and the consumer ends of the supply chain

Create a new MSWord file. Font must be Times-New Roman, 12 point. Line spacing at 1.15, margins at 1 inch all around, a cover sheet with your name, the course name and Assignment Ch. 7 centered on the page.

Now, save this file to your computer naming the file YourLastNameYourFirstName.
Use this to answer the questions to the case below. You must NOT just write off-the-cuff. Look for principles in the book and explain why they would apply. Citing the book’s page number is important. You should use in line citations. For example, If you were using a method of entry from the book, you would end the sentence describing the method of entry, “The best method of entry is contract manufacturing because…. (David, Ch. 4, page 125). I would expect given the amount of information you now have that you would write at least 2 – 3 pages and have referenced material from every chapter. Once you have completed your assignment, run Spell and Grammar check. I highly suggest that you pass it by the Writing Center and take the time to make suggested edits.

Grading: Grammar is checked first

EcoWorld is a manufacturer of enclosed, decorative environments. They are composed of a hand-blown glass sphere filled with water, one fish, and some aquatic plants. The fish and plants work together so that the system will continue as long as it has light. The spheres have become a popular holiday gift so sales skew towards November/December. EcoWorld, located in Seattle, Washington, wants to globalize its process. This year, the European country of Latervia, renowned for its cheap and expert glass blowing, has lifted its export tariff. EcoWorld has also identified another European country, Rombia, as a new market because it has no import fees. Raw materials will be transported via aircraft and the final product will be delivered by aircraft and then truck. Problem statement & Plan

A problem is a visible performance deficiency in an important manufacturing, service, or business process or product. A problem statement is a description in visible and measurable terms of how a particular deficiency affects the performance of an organization. There are several rules of thumb that apply to problem statements. Effective problem statements should:
Describe how the problem relates to the performance of the organization.
State the problem in terms that are visible, specific, and usually measurable.
Be of a size and complexity that is manageable.
Problem statements should never:
Give any preconceived indication of what the root cause might be;
State or imply a particular type of solution;
Affix blame for the problem;
Read through the following problem statements. These are good examples of statements that follow the rules stated above.

In the opinion of the Operating Room (OR) physicians and staff, the first procedure in each room of the OR starts late and the room turnover times are too long. This is leading to physician dissatisfaction, staff tension, inaccurate scheduling, delays in patients| cases, and possibly additional cost in the delivery of operating room services. Currently no money is collected at the time of service for care rendered in Emergency Department. This results in financial losses and increased usage of Emergency Department for non-emergency complaints. Emergency Department Cash Collections Process Team

The efficiency and timeliness of patient transfers between areas (Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, Emergency Department, Evaluation Center, Intensive Care Unit, Medical/Surgery Nursing Unit, Operating Room, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, Ambulatory Care Center, Radiology, Same Day Surgery, Special Procedures) does not meet the expectations of patients, physicians, or staff. The result is longer patient waiting time, longer physician waiting time, delayed patient procedures, inappropriate patient procedures, poor communication between staff members, and confusion and conflict over roles and responsibilities. TEAM CHARTER (40 pts)

You probably noticed that the problem statements you just read involved a number of people and sometimes a number of departments. The best way to approach the problem and take steps toward improvement is to involve representatives from each department or a group of people directly involved with the problem. Gathering a team of people familiar with the problem and its underlying elements is an excellent approach to CQI. Create a CHARTER for your process action team. Discuss how you will coach your team through the issues/steps above. Indicate the performance indicators/hoped for outcomes. Indicate how you will maintain a high level of involvement on the part of staff and what mechanisms/strategies you will use to keep them on track. Indicate how you will assist them with collecting their data. Summarize the benefits the organization will receive from this approach. Essentially, you are creating a proposal so that others will understand why this team approach is necessary.

A team charter defines the purpose of the improvement team and is often published in a single document. Whether published or not, teams should ensure that there is a common understanding of the charter both within the team and between the team and those that chartered the team. Components of the charter usually include:

Problem Statement – This is the core of a team charter and defines the fundamental reason for the teams existence.
Team members – This defines the permanent membership of the team and designates the team leader and facilitator.
Expected Output of the Team – This defines what those that chartered the team expect the team to produce as a result of its work.
Anticipated Measures of Success – This defines the measurable factors that should be used to determine the effectiveness of the teams recommended solutions.
Constraints – This defines the limits of the process the team will work with or specifies other limitations that the team will work under, for example, time and cost.
Expectations and Support – This defines other expectations and specifies any resources assigned specifically to the team.

WORK PLANS (40 pts)

Once the team charter is complete, its time to start work! The best way to approach any project is with a plan. A work plan defines the tasks, timelines, and responsibilities for the major items work facing the team. It is a living document that is usually modified as the team performs its work. Teams also use work plans to track the actual accomplishments of the team. The following format provides a sample work plan to which teams can adapt to meet their needs.

PROBLEM STATEMENT AND PLAN

In this project, you are asked to apply the course principles to an authentic CQI situation encountered in your organization. The project will be worked on throughout the course and build from this initial problem. You must develop a CQI project that:
Uses the problem solving method of FOCUS-PDCA
Improves a current process
Improves customer service
Is a real project

The project itself does not have to be completed by the end of the course. In other words, it can be a proposal. To successfully complete this assignment, you need to define the problem that you will address in this project. Use the criteria below (Identify Problem) to help with this lesson.

Submit your response to the instructor using the drop box week. Again, your instructor may be helpful in helping you make the decision, so keep the instructor in the loop as you develop this assignment.

IDENTIFY PROBLEM (50 pts)
Definition of the issue or problem to be resolved that, once resolved, will improve the quality of a work process and/or improve customer service in your department. Why you decided it was important to resolve it in the first place.

Based on the feedback you received from your consulting proposal last period, using the same client, prepare a succinct 1000-word description of the outcomes for performing the consulting.

Project:
Consulting Outcome
Details:

Part 1:

Include the following major sections from the period 2 proposal with any changes that were recommend by your Professor (if no changes were recommended, you may copy/paste these verbatim into the document): Executive Summary, Background, Analysis, Conclusions, Recommendations. This section does not count towards the 1000-words required for part 2. This should have the heading, Part 1: Proposal. Place this at the beginning of the document.

Part 2:

Based on the feedback you received from your consulting proposal last period, using the same client, prepare a succinct 1000-word description of the outcomes for performing the consulting. Outcomes = desired goals/results. What are the desired results of your consulting with this client? Write from the perspective of a consultant to senior leadership of the organization. Although you may use any format you prefer, it might be helpful to write them in terms of SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-oriented). The desired outcomes/goals should be a set of concrete and detailed steps you will take the help them understand what you will be doing in your consulting with them.

This should have the heading, Part 2: Desired Outcomes. Place this after Part 1 of the document, described above.

There is no standard consulting report. The content of the report will be determined by such things as the nature of the clients specific problems, your consulting style, and the terms of any agreement.

Below is an abbreviated example (of the equivalent of Part 2) of a consulting proposal for a church (JLAP) that describes the Purpose, Desired Outcomes, and Steps that will be taken to complete the consulting. This is ONLY an example. It is not necessarily how your Consulting Outcome needs to look like. Feel free to write your Consulting Outcome according to the needs of your client and how you prefer to do consulting.
