Specifications for Essay Two You will have two weeks to write this essay. It is due at the end of Week Six. The second essay of the semester will be an analysis essay in which students will choose from one of two academic essays in Everyone’s an Author (both of them written for undergraduate classes) and write an analytical essay that demonstrates which elements make them “academic” as opposed to other kinds of writing. The relevant essays can be found in Everyone’s an Author on pages 150 (Spriggs, “On Buying Local”) and 246 (Rubin, “Advertisements R Us”). Choose one of these essays and then write an essay in which you analyze which characteristics make the essay a good example of academic writing. Here are some hints: A good thesis will claim something like, ______ is a good example of academic writing because ______. Your body paragraphs will then support this thesis. Each needs a good topic sentence and evidence in the form of direct quotes from the essay youre analyzing. For more on quoting, see pages 524-546 of Everyones an Author. Theres also a guide to MLA in-text citations on page 550-555 of the same book. You can find two different lists of the characteristics of academic writing. One is in the textbook on pages 44-51, and the other is in the Week Three content within the file, Body Ritual among the Nacirema Assignment. This essay assignment asks you to expand on what you completed in the Week Two discussion Writing for Social Media. First, make a list of all the writing that you remember doing in the last week (or two). Be sure to include everything from texting and tweeting to more formal academic or work-related writing. Then, choose at least TWO examples that strike you as quite different from one another (ideally, these would be from different media) and write an analysis of the rhetorical situation you faced for each one, drawing upon the guidelines in this chapter. Note that these don’t have to be from social media. For this project and presentation, you will be focusing on Organizational Change, which is discussed in Chapter 16. Organizational change can come about for a number of reasons, which include problems within the organization that decreases its reputation or product confidence, innovation, technological improvements, or simply staying ahead of the competition. Mergers and acquisitions, changes in leadership, ethical violations, and organizational mistakes may require changes to the organization.
For example, remember Tony Howard, the former chief executive of BP? He faced leadership and communication problems within his organization following the 2010 oil spill. BP’s image and value plummeted, and the employees’ motivation followed. BP needed to make external changes, and these changes needed to be accepted internally (by the employees) in order to be successful. BP and Howard would be in a lot better shape if they had consulted with us! We want to show this client we can take such an event, research its history, and apply organizational behavior concepts to recommend successful solutions. You will learn that change is very difficult to implement in an organization. Out with the old, and in with the new is not always welcome by the organizations staff. Many employees like the old ways and may be not embrace the change. So, the question becomes how to get everyone on the staff to support the change?
Research and write a paper where you will review an organization that you find needs to implement a change. For this Week 6 your paper will analyze the organization, identify its problems that make it ripe for a change, and apply a change theory.
(In Week 8 you will present your paper to me by video. I will use the best video to present to a new client who could make or break our company. This client is a multi-national, multi-million dollar company that is interested in hiring a full-time consulting service to help their organization implement a large scale change.)

Why this organization was chosen: Identification of the organization and its problems c. Identification of Organizational Change Models. d. Choose the best of the 2 Change Models (Lewin or Kotter) and apply it to the Organization. This is best done using a step by step approach. e. Provide a brief (2 paragraphs) overview of a Change Management Plan to explain the monitoring and progress reporting during the implementation of this plan.
